Hey r/personalfinance! As the title says, I am a 23 year-old call center agent in the Philippines. It's my first job, I started in August, and so far, it's been a great experience - the people from the US who handle the account that I'm working at really care, and they make sure that we're well compensated through various incentive programs.
The job is an entry level job. The basic salary is around P 15,000 (roughly $300 USD), but with overtimes and the incentive program, I could potentially double that to around P 30,000 ($600 USD). To people outside the Philippines, that may seem like a very low amount (which is exactly why many US companies get their customer support from 3rd world countries like India and the Philippines), but here, that's already higher than the minimum wage. The salary is also non-negotiable.
I'm single (by choice. lol) I live alone, and I my financial obligations include rent, utilities, and my brother's tuition fees which could be somewhere between P2,000-8000 ($40-160 USD) every month. I guess once a week, I treat myself to the movies and eat out (after reading most of the threads in this subreddit, I'm now aware that it's financial suicide), but that's been the routine for the past few months, and decided that on my birthday, I'll start saving.
This December, I had my birthday, which also happens to be the day that our monthly incentives appear in my bank account, so as a gift to myself, I went ahead and opened a passbook account with another bank, so that I won't be tempted to splurge. My initial deposit was around P 10,000 ($200 USD), and I intend to add between P 5,000 - 10,000 ($100 - 200 USD) every month.
So yeah, I need advice on how to invest what I have, if I'm I'm saving enough, if there are habits that I should quit... any input will be greatly appreciated!
