Hi! I wanted to share my favourite frugal recipe. I’m Swedish so any errors in translation are my fault :)

This is what you’ll need to make it. 1kg of yellow peas (dried) About 5-6 litres of water Optional: 500g of salted pork shoulder (best translation I could find, basically it’s a technique to preserve the meat. It’s pork shoulder but salted and in a sort of sweet syrup to make it last longer) obviously you can skip this to make this a veggie dish (and it’s a lot cheaper this way too) 2-3 carrots 2-3 onions Thyme, marjoram, salt and whole allspice

Start by putting the peas in water over at least 12 hours. When they’re done, rinse them with water and then boil with the carrots, onions and meat for about 2-3 hours. Put the vegetables in whole, or in big pieces (you will take them out of the soup later). Don’t cut the meat, just put it in whole. You need to have an eye on it at all times. Sometimes you need to fill up with water, and you need to check the meat towards the end. When it’s finished (you can tell this by picking it up with a fork, if it falls off it’s ready) you take it out and dice it. You can then either put it back in or serve it on the side - your choice. I like it better in the soup so I always put it back. The soup in itself is ready when it’s soft and mushy, and all the water is absorbed by the peas (or boiled off). Be careful when refilling with water so you don’t overdo it. It’s better to refill often.

This whole thing will give you about 5-6 litres of tasty, filling soup for a low price. I paid (in Sweden, where food is expensive)

1$ for the peas 1$for the onions 1$ for the carrots The spices are stuff I had at home so I’m not sure what they’d cost... but spices aren’t too expensive. The meat cost about 7$ (this is why the super frugal way to go is to skip the meat) So grand total for me was about 10$ and a cooking time of about 3 hours. Those 3 hours was spent doing other things around the apartment (lazy Saturday with my daughter) so it’s definitely not time lost :)

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! Pictures upon request :)
