I just went through a very nasty breakup. Details of the situation are at the end. The day after the breakup I got a job offer for my dream job that will require me to relocate about 2,000 miles. They are giving me $7,000 after taxes in a lump sum payment to relocate. I have very little stuff (see the story at the end) and am wondering how I can start over in the most frugal way possible. I was at the new location last week and found an apartment (2 bedroom place, one for an office). My plan is to pack my small car with what I have currently and drive. I will need literally everything (TV, couch, kitchen essentials, bed, clothes...pretty much you name it). I bought enough work attire to get by and some friends gave me a few casual outfits after the whole ordeal.

I know furniture is generally very overpriced at a store but I won’t have a truck or help to lift in my new location. I don’t know anyone there besides casually meeting some work folks. My question is: how do I stretch my $7k to furnish an entire 2 bedroom apartment? As much detail as possible would be greatly appreciated...what pots and pans should I get? Suggestions on beds, couches , etc. I’ve never had to start over like this and it’s quite overwhelming when coupled with a cross country move, new job, and no support system.

I’m 32, have an emergency fund that could get me through about 6 months, but I’d prefer not to have to dip into that.

The story: She cheated on me and when I confronted her she destroyed our apartment. By the time the police arrived almost all my stuff had experienced some level of damage (bottles of bleach on clothes/furniture), smashing electronics, and so on. Sadly, the police did nothing as we live in a communal property state and resided together. They said it was a civil matter that would have to be handled in court. I have documented everything in photos and took video of her during the rage, but I wasn’t going to grab her and end of going to jail. I tried my renters insurance for coverage but since she was on the policy they won’t cover it either.

That got longer than expected. Thanks for reading.
