Okay guys, so apparently the reason I've had stomach issues all my life is IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and after a month of eating low fodmap (baring a few blowouts) I'm feeling a lot better but it's blown out my grocery budget quite a bit.
As a baker I was entitled to one free loaf a day and I was using that as my major staple but now I'm putting a cup of rice in with my slow cooker meals and making up the rest with frozen chips ($2/kilo where the cheapest potatoes I can find are $3.50). Are rice cookers really worth it? Are they set and forget (the reason I'm not eating more rice)?
I also got told by my dietitian today (had my one month followup) that I needed to eat more protein (no beans/legumes has really cut into my protein habits). After looking around at alternative stores I found eggs for $5 for 2doz, that's about a dollar a protein meal (of 30g). Are there any suggestions for bringing this down?
In terms of veggies I am buying broccoli as milk has always made me feel sick (and I didn't know so it's now a psychosomatic reaction even when it's LF milk) so I need the calcium, it also seems to be the only green veg I can eat but it's usually about $6 a kilo. Carrots (at $1-2 a kilo), cabbage and pumpkin (at $3) and capsicums (I got a bag for a $1.50 but they're usually around $6 too). Anyone know of some frugal yet nutritious alternatives to the first and last?
