I'm in desperate need of help. I had to move for college in the Northeast from Miami, FL and around the same time my grandmother got very sick so my entire family ended up moving from Miami, FL to the Northeast to take care of my grandmother - unfortunately, she passed away.
I had opened an account with the South Florida Educational Credit Union when I was still in high school in Florida. I never really used the account, however it had been linked to my Paypal account at some point a fee went through and it got charged to that checking account which I never really used. The fee was just enough to put me at a negative balance, by a couple of dollars and then the credit union covered that fee and charged $31 to cover it. The sad part is that they kept notifying me by mail to my FLORIDA address when no one was living there! I never received information that the account went negative since I never received mail and they never cared to email me about it!!!!
They sent my account to a collection agency for $31. The account got charged off - my near perfect credit score (760) tanked to 590. Now that I am in college I am about to graduate and I had gotten a really great offer from a financial services firm. When I signed the offer it was contingent on a couple of things but it was also contingent on being in good financial standing. They informed me of the $31 charge of and I didn't know what to say over the phone since it was the first time I'd ever heard of it. Not only did my credit score tank but I've been reported to ChexSystem as well. Which means that I can't open a new bank account. My life has gotten seriously destroyed for $31 which I didn't know about.
Between possibly losing this job opportunity which I've worked so hard for and the loss of my grandmother I'm just utterly suffering. I've had major anxiety, I can't sleep and don't even know what to do. I called the credit union but they didn't want to negotiate a pay for delete.
Don't know what other options are. Please help :(
