I fear I am slowly being forced out of my city (Minneapolis) due to the rapidly rising COL I'm experiencing.
My real estate taxes are going up, on average, over 10% each year. I realize housing prices are going up, but I have zero interest in moving and my constantly rising mortgage is becoming more and more painful.
I recently received a notification in the mail that they want to repave my street as it's on an active bus line, and I'm responsible for the cost of my portion of it. Makes zero sense to me, but all I can do is argue my point at their next meeting. There's a $2,500 assessment that I was not expecting, nor did I even know was legal (I thought property taxes funded things like street maintenance, or that the proceeds of the city bus service would pay for maintenance.. silly me).
Sales tax continues to rise in this city. I literally just paid over 16% sales tax going out this weekend.
Constant notifications in the mail about special referendums to increase taxes for schools, events, etc.
I simply cannot take anymore of this. I'm tired of being taxed out of my ass at what I consider to be unreasonable levels. I feel like I'm a reasonable person, and I want to contribute to help the overall functioning of my city, but constant heavy increases in property taxes, sales taxes at times literally being double what they used to be, special assessments on my house.. I'm just tired of this.
Sorry for the rant, but I'm saddened that my only option for remaining here is finding another job, which I do not want to do as I'm comfortable where I'm at. My job is currently flexible and I can relocate. Does anyone have any suggestions on a city that doesn't shove constant tax hikes down your throat until you're forced to move or earn more money? Does this even exist, or is this just the reality of living in the US?
