hello /r/simpleliving, i am trying to get by with the least amount of stuff i can own (recently sold my dishwasher and fridge), in the most sustainable manner i can think of (i simply don't eat at home). this approach worked wonders with me in many aspects of my life but right now i cannot solve how to allow myself to have a gaming platform in my life. this was triggered by the recent mass effect: andromeda release, latest in a franchise i spent hundreds of hours of playtime in the past.

i need your help figuring out the best solution for me. here are a few facts:

  • i do not own a tv, a tablet or a game console.
  • i own a 4 year old macbook pro.
  • i'm a front-end developer and would need a personal computer i can work on (i'm most comfortable on macos).
  • i want to be able to play video games. pc gaming has been a huge part of my life even though my playtime dwindled (partly because of the fact that i sold my gaming rig last year).
  • i think i would be content with a console setup in the gaming context but buying a tv/monitor just for gaming (even though it would enable other stuff to do) seems excessive.
  • a brand new macbook pro is a serious investment (and my current laptop is perfectly fine for everything except gaming - nvidia gt 650m is not great).
  • geforcenow seems like the perfect solution but it's still in early access and that's just for continental US (i live in turkey).

here are the options i could think of:

  • bite the bullet and buy a new macbook pro.
  • bite two bullets and buy a tv and a ps4.
  • try playing stuff at lan/ps4 cafes, just don't do it at home (decent places priced at ~5$ an hour or ~300$ a year membership fee)
  • ditch the mac, buy a gaming laptop (i really don't want to do that)
  • ditch the mac, build a hackintosh friendly gaming rig (losing the mobility factor of a laptop and the time investment cannot justify the almost-certainly-unreliable development environment)

i'd love to hear other options, your thoughts on the options i could think of or your own experience dealing with this stuff. thanks in advance!
