Any tips on how to more accurately estimate costs in another city? I'm interviewing with a company that seems like they're going to pay me a 40-50% raise to move to a city with a higher COL. I want to have a rough idea what my equivalent current salary is in the high COL city.
I have found that COL calculators are unreliable and inconsistent -- I get wildly different results depending on which one I use, and they never take into account what area you live in. My guesstimate is that it'll cost me about 50% more in housing plus a 20% increase in all other costs. Taxes are also higher in the new city so I factored that in to get my estimate, then subtracted that from my current COL to get a total "cost of relocating" so that plus my current salary would be the lowest I could accept without losing money.
Does this make sense? Anyone have a better method?
