I got laid off in December. We cut every expense possible. No eating out, dropped all of the cable that we could without breaking our contract. I got a crappy cell phone and plan to get us by. Where I live, our rent is 4X what I made on unemployment. My wife does some side work and really hustled hard to get things done.
We had done some balance transfers to 0% interest a year ago. One was for 16 months, the other for 20 months. We decided that once I started getting paid again, we would start really tackling our debt and I just made a payment to pay one of them off to start our snowball.
This isn't much more than a humblebrag but it really feels good to get one paid off, even after all the shit I had to go through with unemployment.
I made the $550 a month plan permanent. I set that as the minimum payment to finish it one full month before the 0% balance transfer is over. Once I get that done in January, I'll be moving on to my student loans and cars.
It just feels good to be back in control again.
