Recently I have helped many of my friends with complaints about their internet connection being too slow and unreliable to get anything done. They often ask me about "upgrading" to a faster connection which is often the answer they have from the ISP, or buying the expensive "gaming" router that the sales guy at BestBuy pitched them. As a programmer with interests in home networking, I know most of the times, throwing more money at the problem is not the right answer.
I wrote something about this problem, a thing called bufferbloat, and hope this helps anyone suffering the same problem: http://ift.tt/2jycgqo
This requires a bit of work, but spending $20 once is better than spending $20 every month. Could be a fun project to learn about routers as well.
I tried my best to make it easy to understand but I could have a gaping hole in my assumption so criticisms are always welcomed.
