OK a little background to start. I'm a paralegal and I work for a single attorney. (Single as in not part of a firm, not single as in unmarried). He has a tiny practice. I've worked for him less than 6 months and he's only had a handful of clients, most of which were already clients when I started. And these are all small contingency fee cases. It's not a boutique firm for a couple billionaires.
Anyway since I started he's had nothing but good things to say about me. This is my first paralegal job so I ask for more guidance than more experienced paralevala but he's never seemed to mind. His office is always open and sometimes we even sit in there and chat about politics and such (which we both agree on wholeheartedly so its not an issue). He's a really nice guy and great to work for.
But, as I said the practice isn't that busy so I don't always have enough "paralegal" stuff to so during the day. I've started running his business Facebook page and helping with some marketing and networking stuff, but even then sometimes I run out of things to do in the day. I'll ask if he has anything else for me and if he doesn't I'll just do my own thing. Some days I'll start cleaning or organizing papers. Other days I'll just browse Facebook or reddit. He's never said anything about it and I've never not finished a task because I was on my phone or what ever.
That is until today.
This afternoon the hr consultant that usually just handles payroll comes in for a meeting with me. I didn't know about the meeting ahead of time. It was just sprung on me.
In this meeting hr guy tells me that I'm not doing enough and that I'm wasting the attorney's time and that they're going to have to cut my hours if things don't change.
I don't know what to think. Have I been doing something wrong? Is this just his way of telling me that the practice isn't making money and he can't afford to keep me? Or both? What should I do?
Tl;dr I work at a really chill law office for a really nice boss but today an hr consultant basically called me a waste of space. What do I do?
Edit: line breaks
