Sewing is great for saving money except that sewing supplies are not cheap anymore. Often it's cheaper to buy clothes already made than to make them yourself. So here's a few ways I get sewing supplies cheap:
Thrift store curtains and sheets: I make my family matching pjs every year but the material has gotten pretty expensive. Now I keep an eye out for sheets in cute patterns and buy them whenever I see them. I really love flannel sheets for this purpose. Bonus is I usually can reuse at least one hem. Elastic can often be harvested from the fitted sheet to be used in waistbands.
I've used curtains to make throw pillows and to reupholster my dining room chairs. I use any scraps left over to make cloth napkins.
Zippers and buttons: I cut the zippers off of those plastic bags that sheets and comforters come in. They are perfect for use on throw pillow covers. Old worn out clothes that I can't donate are harvested for zippers, buttons, or any other hardware before being turned into rags.
