When I was growing up, I made poor financial decisions. I didn't know what I was doing. I had no real mentors, no guidance.

I always heard about people making five year plans, but I never took it seriously, never made one for myself. As a result, I never understood how small and meaningless most of my goals were. I never realized how long it would take me to achieve the larger goals that I didn't know how to achieve, like buying a house, owning a house outright, or saving enough money to retire. I guess I thought I would just figure that stuff out sooner or later, but in reality I was always too shortsighted.

I believe anyone can start over at any age, figure it out, and start to make better financial decisions. Don't worry if you are already in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s. Never give up. You can always get better at managing your money, and that will make your life a little easier.

I just made my first 5-year Financial Plan for myself. It includes a timeline for some of the goals that I am working towards achieving. I'm not going to go into details, but I will just say that it gives me both direction and peace of mind.

I decided to do this today, because I have been really getting serious about budgeting my money. I have been keeping a close eye on spending, and had already plotted out my financial goals for the next year. So I thought, hey, I should do a full 5-year Financial Plan. And that is what I did.

You should too.
