I've been using a standing desk at home since the beginning of the pandemic and had the well intentioned idea to use an intentionally wobbly stool to encourage me to stand more. Well, I'm definitely standing a bunch more, but standing isn't great for long periods of intense design work, so I am actually less productive than usual. I bought a Steelcase Series 1 drafting stool and I'm now returning it due to some manufacturing defects, but I fell in love with some of its features and became more interested in the brand when I read redditors here praising the brand. I also love the Aeron (and I have one sitting unused at my office) and would love to have one of their drafting stool versions, but the price tag is a bit high for one.
I checked out Crandall and they had some refurbished stool versions of the Aeron, the Leap and the Gesture, but using their aftermarket gas cylinders and footrests. I've seen a few new Steelcases (prefer new foam over fart filled old foam) and refurbished Herman Millers (Millas and Aerons) on Craigslist and I'm considering buying an Aeron and adding Crandall's stool conversion kit. However, I haven't seen anyone comment on them anywhere. Does anyone here have any experience with Crandall's converted stools or their stool kits?
If Crandall's kits are a no go, should I invest in a brand new Herman Miller Sayl stool, which is more in my high $800s price limit (and highly recommended by Wirecutter and Gear Lab)? Any other suggestions?
