Hey PF, first time poster, so forgive me if I miss any details, or if this isn't the place for this post. I'm hoping for some advice on a situation I've found myself in at work. I'm an Alarm Technician, working for my current company for about 3 years. 8 months in sales, and the remainder as a technician. I've gotten to the point in my work now, where I'm proficient in every system we type of system we install, and have installed for the past 20 years.

Recently, I was training a new hire that had been working for one of out competitors for the past 3 years. That company had their proprietary alarm system, which is the only system he is familiar with. He has no experience, or knowledge of any alarm system we install. Over lunch, he asked the question about pay rates for different technicians, at different levels in the company. I happily obliged, and he proceeded to ask about my personal pay, revealing to me that he started out at $24 per hr plus commission / productivity pay. Keep in mind this is someone I'm training, whom has almost no knowledge of the systems we work on. I make $20.50 + comm/PP.

Naturally this felt like a kick in the teeth, and I now feel very much like I'm being underpaid. I've known for a long time, that other technicians make more than I do, but that didn't bother me since they've been with the company longer and undoubtedly are more knowledgeable than I am. This case is different.

I already have a meeting planned with my manager next week, that will include my year end review. My question, is how do i approach this situation. Obviously, I want to ask for a raise, but I feel that a 25% raise, is not only a bit ridiculous, but I don't know if my manager will be able to get corporate approval for me to get that much of a raise. I'm just wanting some advice, as I've never been in this situation and all of my friends/family haven't been either, and have no advice to give.

Thanks
