In February 2010, I purchased a new Nissan Versa base model, manual everything, in cash. That subcompact has given me no trouble these past 9 years and 109,000 miles. A couple of years ago my sister began living with my wife and I. We also had a kid, and we have a dog. We have also moved about 5 hours away from both our family to a small town in eastern Oregon. This little car doesn't seem to fit our new lifestyle of weekend trips up forest service roads to hike, pick huckleberries, sled, etc. Nor is it a very comfortable fit for the three adults, one baby and one dog along with luggage for the 8-10 trips we make to visit our family annually.

What I'm hung up on is that the car is still in fine shape. So I feel wasteful getting rid of it and buying a new small SUV. We have money saved up, so we can afford to buy one outright. We are thinking of a 2019 Subaru Forester base model. I was looking at used vehicles and they are hardly discounted for the amount of mileage put on them. Plus I know I'm going to follow the maintenance schedule whereas I can't ever trust someone else to have done the same. I'm leaning heavily towards buying a new car, but I know people here seem to push the used ones. Does it really matter if I am going to own the vehicle for 9+ years? Is this financially responsible?

Thanks for the advice.
