My wife and I have two teenage children, and I teach them often on how to handle money now and when they are eventually out on their own. For whatever reason, my wife and I have never shared with them how much money we make or how much we have in retirement savings, but I’m now thinking that they are old enough for all four of us to sit down as a family and “show them the books.” Let them see how our budget works, let them see what we make and how much stuff REALLY costs, how we handle savings, etc. Perhaps even let them help us go through the budgeting steps and maintain the budget together over time. Have any of you done something similar? Any reason why we as parents should not divulge our actual numbers?
