I purchased a vehicle in October in Nevada. I have my own financing and since I am military I registered my vehicle in my home state(Florida) which has a tax exemption for military as long as I don’t bring the car into the state for 6 months. I have purchased many vehicles (4 in this state alone including another one from this dealership) and told them that Florida has a tax exemption(since taxes are paid to the state you register the vehicle in). My contract was signed with no tax and I registered the vehicle. My lender is a federal credit union in Oklahoma(since they had an awesome interest rate) and they funded the loan in a couple of days. My vehicle is now registered and my loan has been finalized for two months with me making payments.
I just got a call from the dealership(on 2 Jan) saying I actually need to pay Nevada tax on the vehicle since the Nevada DMV flagged it(when I asked how the Nevada DMV since it was registered in Florida and not Nevada the dealership got quiet and said it just needed to be paid since I am stationed here). They said I need to come pay them.
My question is since my contract has been finalized for so long and I can’t change the loan since it has been to long do I actually need to pay them the $3k they say I owe? I have called the Nevada taxation department and they said tax is do wherever you acquire a product but couldn’t give me an actual legal reference.
