Hi /r/personalfinance I currently have a pretty cushy job (by my standards), but I'm bored. I currently have a side hustle that is just for fun, but I have had a few opportunities to grow. The best (financial) part of my current work is the benefits, so I am wondering, hypothetically, how much I would have to earn in my freelance/side hustle to make it worth giving up a job with excellent benefits? How do you compare employment to self-employment in terms of salary/benefits?

My current position pays $60k/year. I have excellent health insurance (employer pays $385/month, I pay $26). 401k-I invest 4%, employer gives 6%, 100% vested immediately. 3 weeks vacation, nearly unlimited sick time.

In a hypothetical world where I explore a slow transition from employment to freelancing, how much would I have to actually make to convert this side job into something sustainable/comparable to what I currently have?
