I bought an old condo, building built in 1912, updated in 1992. So some stuff is newish, some stuff is very very not up to current code. The project that I thought would be easiest is now driving me crazy- replacing all the shitty almond colored outlets with white ones. Come to find there are no grounding wires. Now I know just enough to wrap some wires around screws and be done with it. I can install a standard outlet in a modern house no problem. I've googled a ton of articles but none of them dumb it down for me enough, or they seem to contradict each other. I don't know what it means when they talk about 12/2 vs 14/2, or rewiring the first outlet in the chain (what chain?), or what the hell im supposed to do with a pigtail wire.Do I need to buy a GCFI outlet for every single outlet in the house, or have an electrician add ground wires? That's pretty expensive as the house has like 30 outlets. Or do I only need to use the GCFI outlets in one per "chain", and how do I figure out what a chain is? Just whichever outlets go off when I turn off each fuse? I found outlets labeled "self-grounding", not GCFI... are those the same thing? What do I do with a pigtail wire, if I need one?I'm replacing some switches and light fixtures too, and found some switches do have ground wires and some light fixtures don't. How much of a problem is that?I'm happy to add pictures of the outlets or fuse box or whatever is needed. If anyone can dumb this down for me, it would be really appreciated. I can follow directions well, but they need to include terms I understand. If I need to call an electrician I'll live with the almond outlets until I can afford one, but would really like to avoid that. How would you explain how to fix this to someone who knows literally nothing about electrical wiring?Thank you. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2RPWwjE
