One of the birthday ideas i used was either castle, robin hood or pirate ship, or something where swords where used. Using a bunch of large cardboard boxes of different sizes, i would make a fort, castle or pirate ship, you get the idea, and for the party i would have a bunch of washable paint and brushes and the kids would decorate it. Then with cardboard, the kids made swords. The pirate year I had purchased a bunch of very old clothes for next to nothing and cut them into pirate outfits. The castle was swords and shields. The robin hood year, i spent months buying green clothes at garage sales super cheap and made a cardboard 'forest' they painted with browns, greens, yellows, burnt orange, and a small amount of flower colors. Then they had hot dogs, followed by cake (thank you betty crocker). After that it was dress up and pretend time. Many many years later, I still have young adults come up to tell me how much my parties meant to them. I never spent more than $15.00 in today's dollars.
