My grandparents received a call saying I was in a accident on a local highway that I was out drinking and I hit a pregnant lady. I ended up breaking my nose on the windshield and I needed $3200 to get out of jail.
Of course my grandparents are straight off the boat Italy. So all they speak is Italian but apparently the scammer sounded just like me and my grandfather said I was crying on the phone and sounded really worried.
My uncle happened to be at there house and spoke to “Me” and my lawyer. They needed $3200 in a check and not to wire the money. My uncle insisted he wired the money so that way I can get out same day and not wait until the check arrives. They stated they will call back and never did. The lawyers name was Michael Stevens.
Another weird aspect to this story is that they knew I was getting married soon. I was actually in California recently and couldn’t see my grandmother since I was running around prepping for the wedding. I did happen to run into my grandfather when I was out and about and told him I would come by Monday to see them at the house; they knew that information, how? I mean they only said “ I’m sorry I couldn’t get around to seeing you guys when I was over there” .
Is there any precautions I should be taking? Is this from the Equifax leak do you think? I just don’t know how they knew I was getting married, apparently sounded like me and knew my local highway!
I don’t have social media, all my passwords are ridiculously long thanks to my password manager and there happens to be no recent activity that’s weird on my accounts.
Sorry for wall of text but I’m pulling my hair out seeing how they knew some info. I mean googling my name I can find myself but nothing about getting married. Then googling my grandparents name I see them on white pages and stuff but nothing says I’m there grandchild.
I feel like I shouldn’t be worried since they obviously didn’t state anything specific besides my local highway and they were just going broad with everything. At the same time I just hate this happened to them and would’ve lost it if something would’ve happened to them from them freaking out on the situation.
