I have gotten to the point where I just cannot do it anymore with my part-time job. It is not economically sustainable for me to continue to work a part time gig as a 23 year old (nearly 24) and not have full-time work/my own place. I graduated two years ago into what looked to be an amazing job market and then COVID came and screwed over everything. I was working for the US Government in the Census Bureau making great money, but with the Census over. I have to start looking. I was applying to the field my degree is in, but thanks to working in the government. No one will touch me in that field.

Then when COVID happened my family pressured me to work for this grocery business. However, I just do not see room for me to advance in this company. Plus, if I was full time or management my raise would only be to $15 or so. I am only at $12. So I think it is time that I leave soon. Today I made a promise with myself, I want to give myself the best birthday gift ever by putting in my two weeks on my shift after my birthday (mid-June). That way, I can work those weeks, save money, and then when I start the new job. Then once I leave, continue to save some money for a month or so, then buy my apartment.

I think it makes pretty good financial sense. I might say I am not totally walking away from my grocery job and could do some weekends if need be, but if they aren’t willing to offer a dedicated employee who has never missed a shift of work and indicated very early on he wanted to go full-time after a year and a half there. It is time to move on.
