I see a lot of people comment here about threatening to leave their internet provider in order to get a better rate once the promotional rate ends, and I wanted to share my experience doing the same with Comcast today.
I noticed my bill jumped about $35 (thanks Mint!) and logged on to Comcast to see my promotional rate ended. I tried to change service online, but the only "offers" were for packages that were more expensive, so calling was the only option.
I went through the automated system until I got someone in the "service cancellation" department, but this time I was overly polite and friendly and just said "Hi Tia, I noticed that my promotional rate ended this month and my bill jumped significantly, and I wanted to see what we could do to get my bill reduced." No threats of leaving (I wasn't), no stories about how I can't pay (I can), and no grandstanding about being a loyal customer (I'm making this call yearly after all).
Instead, I just told them I wanted to pay less and asked how that could happen. Of course, the first pitch was for a bigger package at $12 more a month than the increased rate. "Thanks Tia, but we have small children and just don't watch enough TV to make that worth it. Is there anything that would lower my bill?"
Then, I got an offer for same package at the former rate for another 12 months. No threats, no bullshit, entire call took 13 minutes including the time to approve the new package.
TLDR: just ask for a discount nicely, you'll probably get one.
