My husband and I have been together for 4.5 years, but we just got married at the end of 2017. Early in our relationship, I saw him get a fairly substantial financial hit when he was freelancing and managed to not set aside enough money for taxes. He owed quite a bit and it made me seriously consider what type of future financial decisions he would make.

Now he no longer freelances, but his income has gone up. And he has moved from a state with no income tax to a state that does have (a fairly high) income tax. And I just learned that he apparently wasted yet another opportunity to increase his withholding in 2017 and plans to owe thousands of dollars when taxes are done this year.

Since we are filing jointly, I am of course frustrated that my nice little return I am used to getting will be going towards the big dumb amount he owes. And I think if only I could say something that would ACTUALLY GET THROUGH TO HIM about how dumb it is not to just increase your damn withholding so we don’t owe a ton of money in April.

Side note we’re trying to buy a house and expecting a baby in the fall. So I’ll take any advice I can on turning my husband into a financially sound man.
