So basically, a while back I decided that Facebook was making me unhappy. Like it still sucks getting into arguments with strangers on Reddit -- and I have to be better at learning to walk away from provocative or deliberately argumentative people -- but at least on Reddit I can pick my topics. On Facebook, I was getting bombarded with stuff that my friends were interested in or commenting on and it was just getting overwhelming.
So I left a post telling my friends what I was doing and included my cell phone number and email address.
At first, there was a weight lifted off my shoulders, but then that was slowly replaced by a kind of sadness. I knew that I would have to put in more effort to stay in touch with friends, but I didn't realise just how ingrained so many people are in terms of using Facebook as a primary form of communication.
Number of friends that bother to text me back? Two.
Number of international friends who reply to my emails? Zero.
Even of the two friends that'll text me back, often the conversation will just suddenly drop off, and trying to organise any kind of get together is seemingly impossible.
I kind of feel like maybe I'm being a Luddite about all this and fighting against inevitable change in technologies and societies. I'm tempted to install Messenger again, just so I can actually stay in touch with people.
Does anyone have any advice in this situation?
