My dad recently passed away from esophageal cancer. Before he passed away, an ER out of state ordered a medical airlift from a trauma center to the hospital where his oncologist practices.
Humana initially denied the claim because the formal medical diagnosis was "dysphagia" meaning trouble swallowing, and didn't appear life-threatening on paper. However it really was, due to his already-poor health.
After the initial denial, we mailed Humana's appeal form to them. We called to follow up and it was never received, and Humana says the date has already passed and they won't accept any further appeal on the bill and the denial is final. Now the administratrix to his estate (my mom) is being billed for the full balance by a collection agency. She's making payments of $200 per month to pay it down.
I recently came into about $10,000.00. What are my chances of getting the bill reduced to that amount or less in exchange for immediate payment?
Note: the airlift took place while my parents were on a trip to North Carolina. We live in Kentucky and that's where the oncologist was.
