At the end of last year my wife I bought a TV. Before that whenever we wanted to watch a TV show or movie we would watch it on the bed - usually before going to sleep - as my desk with a monitor is opposite. It required quite a lot of effort as we’d have to get ready for bed, then I’d have to clear the junk off the desk and start the computer playing whatever we wanted to watch.
We don’t subscribe or watch any traditional TV service (although I’m thinking of tuning free-to-air channels to stop the “No service setup” message whenever I turn on the TV), but it’s a smart TV, so has built in apps for all the streaming services. We decided to subscribe to Netflix, so we’d have more options that whatever content we’d previous obtained ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
A lot of people talk about cutting the cord to free up time and avoid watching mind dumbing TV, but by signing up for Netflix that’s exactly what we do now. Before we would have to make a real conscious effort to decide what TV shows and movies to watch (there are a lot of good shows out there - mainly ‘classics’), now we just fall on the couch and press a couple of buttons on the remote. Instead of researching a TV show, we just watch whatever it recommends to watch next (and as it autoplays you don’t even need to do anything :D).
So if you decide to go cord cutting, look at what you are replacing it with, and how you are consuming content. We are probably going to cancel Netflix as really it’s just the same old rubbish as traditional TV, and a lot of things we’d like to watch aren’t on there.
