I am a 34m, married with two kids, 7 and 4. My wife and I own a small business that has been booming due to cannabis growers (we manufacture an item that helps with temperature and humidity regulation).
I currently make 6 figures in my sales job (salary, not commission based), I carry the health insurance and get 6% of my salary matched by my employer for my 401k. I work in a very niche industry, and have more experience than most people 10 years older than me. So I feel like if I left, I could easily get a job paying at least 80% of what I get now.
The sales of our small business has grown due to cannabis growers in CA, CO, and WA. The increased income has grown enough that it can replace my salary. A health insurance plan will cost us $13,000 a year.
I don't hate my job, but I commute an hour to work each way and travel 25% of the time. My kids are young and my youngest starts full time kindergarten in September. So if I want to maximize my time with them, now is the time to make a change.
I could probably help out at the business occasionally and save the $13,000 by replacing part time hourly work. I could also pick up side jobs if I wanted to. Is it too big of a risk? Has anyone else done it? How did it go? Am I crazy to do this? Am I crazy not to?
