I'm in the Army and I just moved to Georgia. My wife and I both had hard-pulls for renting a home. I also had a hard pull for natural gas utility service. For utilities, I can sometimes sign up without a hard-pull, but the cost is always higher. I don't mind paying a deposit in lieu of a credit check, but for natural gas, the therm rate without a contract (which requires a credit check) is like three times higher. I don't understand how hard-pulls for accounts that don't involve lines of credit lower a credit score. I currently have three pulls on my record, none for requesting a loan, and I move again in February! I'm actually watching my credit score get lower. I may want to buy a home in one of these moves, so I'm very protective of my credit score. Is there a way to avoid the hard-pulls for either renting or for utilities?
