About a month ago, I looked at my credit karma and saw an account in collection I was not expecting. I called to ask about it, but they said for anything other than paying it, I should call the original creditor. So I called them - it was a medical bill from about a year ago, and a valid charge. However, I never received the bill for it because I moved between time of service and the bill being sent. My mail was forwarded but for whatever reason this got missed. They told me they had on record that the bill was returned to sender, I explained what happened and that I'd be happy to pay in full on the spot if they'd take it out of collection, they said they'd call back in 2-4 weeks. I called them back this past friday, 4 weeks later, no information and they told me I'd have to talk to the collection agency. By then they were closed so I figured I'd call monday.
Yesterday, I got a notice of collection in the mail (sure, now they take the 5 seconds to verify my address...) from a lawyer at the collection agency, stating he's not acting as a lawyer but as a debt collector, because I had not yet paid or made arrangements for a payment plan. I don't know if they're just trying to scare me with a lawyer's letterhead or what, but I don't know what to do.
Can I save my credit at this point or am I screwed?
