I forgot to put a flair and it automatically put "credit", sorry for that. I don't know where else I should post this. I am sorry if it breaks the rules. I checked the rules and it seemed to fit here, but if not could you please recommend somewhere else to ask?
I have a bank account in my name at Morgan Stanley with money from a settlement. As a very young child I sustained an injury I don't want to detail, and was awarded a sum of money which was placed in a bank account, with it in my mothers name to manage it until I turned 18. Upon turning 18 I was told about the account, and went to a courthouse where a judge gave the order for the account to be changed to be solely in my name.
It's been a little over two years since the account got turned to my name. The reason I have to post this here is that I cannot ask my mother for the details of the account to access it because my family is the psychotic type, and snapped into psycho mode out of nowhere. They could kick me out of their house very soon and would sooner see me be homeless than let me access my own money for a place to stay while I find a job. I am only 20 and in college, and I only have a couple thousand dollars on hand. It would be in my best interests right now to have access to this account so that I can pay for a place to stay and find a job, and of course to finish college without interruption, instead of being homeless for a while... I don't believe I could live off of ~two thousand long enough to find a job and apartment, since I would presumably be staying in a motel for a while which will drain my money fast.
The problem is I have no idea how I would go about accessing it; what information I would need to know, what kind of identification I would need to bring, etc.. I don't know anything at all about the account beyond that it exists at Morgan Stanley and that it's in my name, and so I have absolutely no idea what I should do.
I honestly do not have any experience managing bank accounts at all in the first place, so please explain this to me as if I am five years old. I have worked jobs of course, but solely for the experience, and my mother (before going off the deep end) would just deposit the money for me to save up. My family is wealthy enough that the money I earned was insignificant, so I was just told to save it all for later, hence me working for the experience.
Thank you in advance for your help, and I apologize for the formatting as I am typing this from my phone.
