Hi PersonalFinance,
I'm posting on behalf of my mother, for whom English is not a strong suit.
My mother has been in an abusive marriage for the past 20-25 years, and is now 50-55 years old and trying to get out. While she has no debt and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting at a small accredited university, she is unemployed, and her job experience is spotty (3-5 years cumulative, with an average stint per company of just under a year) and her English may hurt her interviewing ability. She can understand fluently, but her speech is less so.
Given the upcoming legal fees, difficulty in the job search, and limited amount of time to build up retirement savings, what are her options?
My sister and I can support her financially, but she would appreciate anything that would help increase her level of independence. As a side note, I think it would be good for her to get a job, if only to bolster her confidence and help her regain social skills and social networks that have been lost for so long.
Any advice (from interview help to investment strategies) would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-AnOrnateToilet
