Hello PF, I've seen a bunch of posts helping people with similar situations but I've never run across one like this so hoping for some assistance. Found a motorcycle for $1300 on Craigslist, which for this bike is about $1000 cheaper than one would expect, so red flag one. The guy told me he took a loan out on the bike with a local credit union and asked that we conclude the transaction at the bank branch, which sounds okay.

The part that has me wondering is that he said he does not have the title and that the people at the credit union will send it to me in the mail, and he has dodged questions I have asked to clarify if his name is on the lien. I understand that when you finance a vehicle the bank keeps the title, but again he has been very vague in how this is set up. It's such a good deal that I'm tempted to go and see if it's legit, but he's 2 hours away and I'll have to rent a motorcycle trailer and I don't want to waste 5 hours of my time just to walk away from a motorcycle thief.

Any advice? I have asked him if his name is on the loan, if he has the keys, and if the credit union can give me something in writing that they will send me the title. All these questions have been essentially ignored when he responds to other questions I have asked and I just don't have a good feeling.

Thank you in advance!

  • Edit: I called the credit union to verify that they do in fact allow personal loans against 2005 motorcycles (the year if the one in question) and pressed the seller for more information. He finally confirmed with me that he has the keys and he said he verified with the credit union that they will give me documentation that I requested, which was also confirmed by them when I spoke with them. I am going to insist we go to the DMV to get it registered in my name, and of course ride it before we exchange cash. If I get another red flag I will walk for sure.

Thank you to everyone who weighed in, hopefully soon I'll be the owner of a bike I picked up for a steal!
