Throw-away, and leaving interesting/humanizing context out for now.
I've owed a credit card company around 3000 CAD, as of ~3 years ago.
My debt was sold to a collector long long ago. My lifestyle is relatively "non-standard", and the closest collectors get to me is their occasional voicemails forwarded over email.
If they left the juice running for 3 years, I'd be around, say, 8000CAD in debt. I can pay that cash, now. Could have a long time ago.
My debt is based in a jurisdiction where the statute of limitations on CC debt is 3 years; I can no longer be sued over this debt. Which in theory, means that from now on, the worst that can happen is getting (so far, boring) voicemails, have shitty relationships w/ financial institutions, and the lingering annoyance.
Still, I'd like to clean up my act, have collectors stop wasting bandwidth, and perhaps get my credit back on track one day, if ever I needed it.
My thoughts: - Get in touch w/ a bankruptcy person (or people w/ experience dealing w/ creditors) - Have them negotiate the repayment/settlement - get all that in writing, "Debt X, settled in full blah blah" - send a check
Any better ideas?
