Hi all,
I'm a 27 year old male, completed school, then 6th form but decided uni wasn't for me (also the country was in recession and uni was a hard sell).
In work I spent a couple years hopping from whatever retail jobs I could get and moving on for more hours until I ended up at McDonalds where you could essentially work as many hours as you were willing. Being driven I worked alot and within the first 12 months went to 'shift management' level (no huge rise in pay but more that the then minimum wage)... during this time I had a relationship which resulted in a child. After 6 years there I decided to find a real career as I wasn't willing to climb within that company any further and so left for an apprenticeship at a brick manufacturers.
I knew that the short term I'd have a slight drop in pay but I was after a long term position and this would give it to me, along with a fully paid university degree.
It's here that I ask for the group advice.
I'm shortly going to be taking exams in my 3rd year of university and then the course will be done. After some training hoops to jump through and a 'project' I will be done but I don't know what wage I will be on yet. However I am in a stable relationship with my current girlfriend and would like to plan towards a deposit in the future now that I can start saving (slowly but i am able) and then when my wages change it should be much easier to move out.
So... in round figures, I have ~£500-£1000 saved already and I'm currently putting £20 per week into my ISA (<0.5% interest), £10 per week into an inhouse sharesave scheme (144 weekly payments, share purchased at a fixed price, at the end either sell up at current share price or get my money back - win/win situation but that was all I could afford at the time), I have probably another £30 per week disposable income and I've just paid my annual car insurance and tax so no big outgoings planned for a few months now...
What do I do with this small amount I can collect? The ISA isn't working what money I do have, I know that but its safe, Do I even have enough to try and make it work for me?
Just looking for some guidance to help gather funds for deposit :)
TL:DR; Finally stable but growing a house deposit is slow going, can I make what little I save work for me better?
