Hello /r/frugal! I was hoping to hear your tips for traveling abroad on a budget.
Details: 30F, architecture student
Study abroad trip from mid may to end of June. Starting from Ky, USA to Madrid, Spain. At the end I want to take a train from Italy to London where I will visit a friend for 2 weeks and then fly back to Ky.
My hotels and in-country travel will be covered by the study abroad program. Also covered are some tours/museums/arch related things. There will be 11 students, 2 professors.
Need: Flight (I found a round trip flight for 918.00 USD on kiwi.com). Seems like a great price. Long trip though. I plan to bring just a backpack as a carry on plus my purse.
Food: how are grocery prices in Spain/Italy? I eat mostly unprocessed, fresh fruit, veggies, nuts, and meat. I will eat at restaurants some, but don't want to gain 50lbs or spend a million dollars. I want to be able to keep things in my room for breakfast/lunch at least.
Toiletries: what's essential to buy vs bring?
Laundry: better to do it at a laundromat or in hotel sink?
Entertainment: I want to hike, explore little towns, see the beaches in Italy, etc. is there a way to do excursions without spending an arm and a leg?
I'm determined to get the most out of the experience without spending a ridiculous amount. Any advice welcome!
