The reason I’m framing my question this way is because the majority of newcomer questions I see are always centered around what SHOULD we do (how to begin? Which brokerage? how to allocate? What to do with 80k? what are the best funds? 2 fund? 3 fund? VOO and chill?)

Naturally, with open-ended type questions, an abundance of opinion and bias floods the comment section. When you encounter so many differing opinions, things can get overwhelming for a newcomer.

I know there’s not one perfect approach to investing since nobody can predict the future, but I have to imagine there’s some hard and fast principles that are accepted as truth far and wide. Therefore, perhaps the easier question for amateurs is, simply, what should we not do?
