Started a job in late 2021. Accepting the job garnered a 10k sign-on bonus, of which 35% was received as it was distributed in increments.*
Moved, so I left the job in the middle of 2022. They never asked me to repay the bonus or anything. I'm expecting them to at some point, but I'd also read that falling through the cracks is kinda common? IDK, but I'm not complaining. Anyway, by the time I left the position I'd earned $35k pre-tax. I'm doing my taxes now, and my W-2 from that company, on box 1 (Wages, tips, other comp) is just $3666.
Any idea as to why? Now that I write it all out I can't see how this would relate to the bonus at all, the math doesn't check out at all. I just don't have any other ideas. What should I do?
\ Doubt this is relevant, but just in case - at the beginning of 2022, letters went out company-wide offering to move up payment of the bonuses as a "retention measure," but also they needed you all to sign here to accept these terms which now include specified repayment in the event of not completing the year with the company. I was not thrilled with the position, so I didn't sign. The original offer letter was quite vague.)
