I know each 401k plan is different, but do there exist plans where the following is possible:

  • i contribute after-tax dollars into 401k
  • after-tax dollars are automatically converted to the Roth bucket of 401k ("in plan conversion")
  • i rollover the after-tax dollars now in the Roth bucket, to a Roth IRA (while still being employed at the same place) [???]

I am unsure if the third step above is possible? The advantage would be that I could withdraw my contributions from the Roth IRA whenever, whereas withdrawing contributions from the Roth 401k seems tricky.
