I don’t know if this is the best subreddit to post this, but here I go.

I’m currently in vacation in the United States. I’m Puerto Rican, so I have always been aware that the US is all about consumerism. But, oh my god. First, do suburban people have any other form of entertainment rather than eating? Everywhere I look, there’s just endless places to eat and not much else. Second, the roads are ENDLESS. Yes, the infrastructure in Puerto Rico is absolute ass, but at least I can manage as a pedestrian. Here, you don’t get NOWHERE without a car. So this leaves room for endless food chains to invade everywhere!

I post this here because I genuinely try to be as frugal as possible. I even brought food from back home because I didn’t want to waste money buying more. I did only the necessary groceries for the week to cook over here and even panicked a little when I realized I actually might not need all I bought despite being careful.

Everywhere I look, I’m just overwhelmed. I needed some syrup, and the smallest size available was HUGE! Like, XL in PR. And there was a ENTIRE ISLE WALL FOR CEREAL! So so so many options for absolutely everything. And the portion sizes and calories are so huge! (I was only thankful of this when it came to the blueberries lololol)

I don’t know. I don’t consider myself poor at all, like genuinely. I just live in a poor country, and I guess I hadn’t realize how “wasteful” everything is in the US. Excess roads, portions, grocery store options, land for property… The list goes on. As someone who tries to waste as least as possible, I feel like an ant. 🐜 That is all.
