Don’t really use this subreddit much, but hoping this is the right place for this question. This relates to my mom’s monthly electricity bill which she mentioned on a call with me was insanely high but just paid it as her electricity company stated it was accurate. They sent someone out to check the readings and verified it all as well. Essentially told her on the phone it is accurate and nothing they can do.

I told her there had to be an error here and so read through her statements. I read her monthlystatements and it is clearly an erroneous reading or someone is stealing her electricity. Based on her statements her average monthly usage is around 400-500 KWH and this monthly bill came in at 10,335 KWH used for a $1,400 bill. What could possibly cause such a one off high reading at over 20x the normal usage? She mentioned the only thing she could think of was she had some construction done, removing/replacing an exterior wall, in which they used her electricity for 2-3 days. Do you think that could have caused it? She had called and they stated there is not a chance it would have caused this for what they used. What next steps would you recommend here as it doesn’t seem the electric company is budging. Also unfortunately it is an older place and not on a computerized system so can’t see which day caused the spike.
