Summary:
Im located in new york. Non american company located in africa. CEO located in ireland.
Back in may-june 2021, i worked remotely for a small e-commerce company as an analyst. One month in, they fired me, ignored me, and refused to pay me.
I’ve reached out to department of labor NY, they said they can’t do anything because the company isn’t located in USA.
Is there anything I can do? Or should i just drop this whole mess?
In depth situation:
May 2021 fresh out of college. I found an e-commerce company that sells african goods. They hired me as an analyst for $20 an hr. The company is located in africa, the ceo is located in ireland, and the company hires people from around the world.
I signed the contract. It says quit anytime fire anytime.
Heres the plot twist, the job isnt actually $20. Rather, the CEO said i have 25 hrs to finish my task.
Long story short, a month into the job, ive only worked 25 hrs. AKA made $500 dollars. The CEO then fired me, and refuses to send me the $500.
After i was fired, i found another job that actually pays me. And i kinda just dropped the whole thing.
But now, i want to get my money! I contacted department of labor. They said since the company is located in Africa, they cant do anything about it.
I cant believe this actually happened to me. So shady.
