For a little background, I moved to a new state to start working my first job out of college in late september of 2020. I filed taxes, and instead of getting state taxes back in my tax returns, I found out I somehow owed a little over $260.
I set up an account on my new states taxconnect website, and saw that I had 15 or so unread letters. When I opened the letters, they were addressed to another persons name with an address in the state I work and live in now, but the letters go back to 2012 when I lived in my home state and was a freshman in HS. I talked to someone at the revenue department about the taxes I owed (which is why I didnt get a return but instead got a bill), and we were able to sort that out. The guy I spoke with thinks it was likely a mistake in one digit of the SSN as opposed to tax fraud/identity theft, but it is still messing up all of my personal taxes as this person has been working under my SSN for 9 years and presumably not paying any taxes since.
They suggested I get in touch with the IRS, but I havent been able to get through their phone lines for days despite calling at different times throughout the day, many times per day. What can I do??
