Hey guys. Just having some doubts about this money I was just given. I randomly checked my bank account this evening to see if I’ve gotten a check I’ve been waiting on, and noticed my savings went up quite a bit. Upon checking it looks live I’ve been given north of $1200 from the IRS.

It appears in my account as “ACH CREDIT IRS TREAS TAX REF”

I’m just not sure why I got this and I’m wondering if I should be concerned about this being a mistake and me being at fault for penalties if I use the money and don’t report this, or if there’s possible identity theft going on here.

I filed my taxes already way back in February and between what I owed and what I was owed I was up only about $100, which I’ve already gotten months ago.

I also have gotten every stimulus package to date.

The only thing I can think is that I’m owed this money because I filed my taxes before the break was announced on the unemployment taxes (you don’t have to pay taxes on the first $10k of unemployment income). I paid these taxes when I didn’t have to and I’ve basically just been waiting to see what they were going to do for people like me that paid on the 10k. I was on unemployment for 3 months last year because of covid. I’ve been working again since last June.

I have not seen anything on the news or Reddit about getting the money kicked back to us, and I feel like I would have heard or read something like that happening if this was the case.

So; should I be worried or is this money really for me?
