I have already contacted an attorney and have a meeting set for tomorrow. In need of advice leading up to the appointment.

My mother was admitted to the hospital mid March with COVID-19. She was able to win her first battle with the illness but was readmitted to the hospital two weeks ago with multiple organ failure and we have made the decision to discontinue life support tomorrow.

My Step Father was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma brain tumor the day my mother was first released and his cognitive decision making skills have been impacted. He understands what is happening with my mom but remains unable (due to the tumor and treatment) to make complex decisions. His daughter gained durable power of attorney over his finances and he is listed as the primary beneficiary of my mothers employer life insurance policy ($80,000). My brother and I are listed as secondary.

I have a meeting with an attorney tomorrow to try to identify what options we have if any to see that my mothers estate does not end up in the hands of his children when they are all rolled together and he passes away(likely within the next year). I have contacted an attorney and will meet with them tomorrow morning but I don’t really know what I should bring to the conversation. I am not familiar with my mothers estate but know that they kept their finances mostly separate. I also know my mom was never a saver. And likely does not have a nest egg and likely has some debt.

I really don’t have any idea what I am doing and am just looking for any advice but specifically what I should talk with the attorney about tomorrow.

We all live in Michigan.
