Full disclosure, I’ve never done this before.
My dad is helping me, but I’d like to have something useful to present to him so that it’s not just him doing all the work and me observing—it’s my future, after all.
I know my starting salary and the local tax rates. My company is providing a relocation bonus. They don’t suggest specific neighborhoods or buildings AFAIK—they just pointed me towards apartments.com when I asked.
My plan is this:

Make a budget spreadsheet for my whole soon-to-be lifestyle. I was going to do that anyway, but this way, I can get a better feeling for my monthly post-tax income.

Calculate the ideal monthly rent (which is the monthly post-tax income divided by 3 IIRC).

Go on apartments.com and plug the above value into the proper variable, along with location, bedrooms, amenities, etc.

Contact the resulting apartments, take virtual tours, actual tours, verify that I’d actually want to live there and that there are no other concerns with the area.

Apply for a lease.

Be approved for a lease (hopefully).

Sign the lease.

Move in on the move-in day.
