I have gone from being able to spend lavishly to feed the family to having to be more frugal. I am sure there are a lot of people in the same boat.
Here are a few ways that I have become a better cook.
-
I have learned how to spatchcock (butterfly) a whole chicken and mostly debone it (Removing the rib cage, chest plate, spine and thigh bones.)- and everything I remove goes into making chicken stock for chicken noodle soup the next day - and I find there is much less wasted food on the plate after the meal.
-
Crack all the chicken bones to release the flavour in the stock. Any leftover 50/50 onions, garlic, spring onions, leeks also go into the stock.
-
Buy and look after your own potted herbs. This one saves so much and fresh herbs are amazing.
-
Buy a spray bottle for your cooking oil. Since doing this I go through about 1/3rd of the oil and my food is less oily.
-
Fresh fruit and veg really does go a long way and adds so much.
-
I have learned how to prepare “tough” meats like chuck steak by cooking low and slow and they can be so delicious.
Any other frugal cooking tips?
