I was officially divorced in November 2020, so I filed single. Due to outside circumstances, I really pushed the deadline but e-filed my taxes the evening of 5/17/2021. I owed money in taxes, so I paid that at the time of filing. At 11:55 pm I check and see that my e-file was rejected due to the code "For the filing status selected in the return, the Primary SSN in the Return Header must not be the same as the Spouse SSN on another return for the same tax year with filing status Married filing separately". I double-checked my return, I definitely filed as single, and the only SSN anywhere on there is my own. The only thing I can think of is if maybe my now ex-husband filed as married-but-separate on his tax forms thinking he was supposed to since we were married for MOST of 2020 (although not by Dec. 30th, which would be what matters, right?). That's the only other tax return I can feasibly see containing my own SSN as married separate/joint.
So how do I correct this? Do I get in touch with my ex and have him resubmit his tax return corrected? Do I have to call the IRS or mail them a copy of my divorce decree? Did my payment for taxes go through? Or am I screwed with late fees/interest because it was rejected and now it's past the deadline? Help please!
