My oldest of three is deciding on which college to attend in the fall. He got into several schools, some of which are ranked higher but will cost twice as much as the alternatives such as a state school or another where he got a merit scholarship. Eventually I'm pretty sure he will go to graduate school, likely medical school.

The more expensive options are ranked in the 30 to 40 range on US News and World Report, whereas his much less expensive options are ranked in the 50 to 70 range on that list.

I have three children total, and I will be able to pay for all of them to go to college and graduate school without loans, regardless of where they attend. But how much I can help them after that in terms of buying their first house, helping them afford to pay for college for their kids, etc, I don't know. It will depend on how much I spend on their education.

If my son chooses a less expensive college, the money I'm not spending on the more expensive school will go to him in the future to help with those other things. I'm just not sure how important that is and whether I should push him in that direction.
